The resources below may be helpful for independent language learners to maintain their language skills:

  • Sounds of Speech – Providing a comprehensive demonstration of how speech sounds are formed, the site also uses animations, videos, and audio samples to enhance the learning experience for both ELT teachers and students interested in improving pronunciation of American English.
  • BBC Learning English – A content-rich website with tons of ideas and activities for ELT self-study. Frequent updates are made to this free resource, with target levels ranging from basic to advanced English-language proficiency. Engaging podcasts supplement main grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation points.
  • ELLO – With more than 2,500 free lessons on countless topics in the English Listening Lesson Library Online, lessons are relevant to today’s world and answer to varied interests. ELLO gives English-language learners access to authentic videos of native and non-native speakers from all over the world, with the ability to choose the nationality, topic, lesson type, and topic.
  • Emojis in the Classroom – A blog article highlighting ways to connect digitally native students to language acquisition via emojis. Includes links to suggested lesson plans.
  • LearnEnglish KidsThe British Council has great resources. We particularly like their animated Short Stores. This online tool is great for children, parents, and teachers.
  • GCF LearnFree ReadingThe reading comprehension activities are interesting and fun.  If students need to practice and develop their reading skills, this site is for them.
  • GCF LearnFree Everyday LifeGCF LearnFree has a second site that focuses on Everyday life activities. Here, students can practice their English skills related to specific contexts.
  • ELTBASE – A database of resources for teachers and students of English as a second or foreign language. English language worksheets, quizzes, notes and other online resources are indexed by language point and linked to leading course books.
  • English Media LabThis site offers free ESL interactive learning exercises that cover the areas of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.
  • International Children's Digital LibraryThese free digitalized books are great for ESL students. The books are also available in multiple languages.
  • ESL VideosThis site provides educational resources for English as a Second Language Students to improve their listening, speaking, grammar, and vocabulary skills. The quiz activities and lessons are created by teachers, and are free to use in class, lab, or at home.
  • Write and ImproveFor those interested in working on writing skills, this is a fantastic site. Lessons focus particularly on grammar and spelling and give immediate feedback.
  • English GrammarEvery ESL teacher has to teach grammar. This site lists the grammar rules of English alphabetically, and they are easily accessible. Not only that, they provide PDF files of lessons on these rules that teachers can use with their students.
  • Dictionary.comNo one wants to carry around a ten-pound English reference dictionary, but everyone likely already carries something that gives you internet access. If so, bookmark dictionary.com for easy reference. This site will give you definitions of English words as well as thesaurus entries and a word of the day, along with many other helpful resources.
  • Free4talkFree4Talk is an easy way for English language learners to interact with others from around the world in a fun way.
  • TED EDTED talks are quite popular and with this website, students can find any number of videos related to a topic they are interested in. Each video is accompanied by a lesson that includes comprehension questions to check for understanding as well as open-ended questions and links to explore more about the topic. Most of the videos are pretty short, so you can easily watch it twice if you need, and you can usually find the transcript as well.
  • Podcast in EnglishRemarkable for its sheer variety, this site offers a wealth of podcasts for every level. Episodes are quite short – under 5 minutes – and address entertaining topics. There’s also a wide range of quality support material
  • Linggle – An English grammar and linguistic search engine developed by the Natural Language Processing Lab of the National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan. It helps students check word choice, usage, and collocations in order to make their writing more natural.
  • Academic Phrasebank – A web resource originating out of the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom for essay writers who are interested in frequently used phrases found in research papers.
  • Ozdic – An online English collocations dictionary which helps students find words that often appear together and gives them a clear idea of how the words are used. For example, students can check the prepositions, adjectives, and verbs that most often come with a noun. It is also possible for students to find alternative word matches for variety.
