DonorsChoose Project Name: Creating Authors and Illustrators

Teacher’s Name: Ms. Rountree

Grade Level: 3-5

Project description: Research shows that students remember and learn concepts by doing things that help them connect their thoughts, ideas, and their life to their work. “I believe they can do this through artistic expression to supplement their writing”, said Ms. Rountree. She will use these materials to enhance students’ creativity when reading literature and writing. For example: when students write about the fall season, they can create an illustration or painting to express themselves.

Why did you select this project? This project spoke directly to me! Working in educational publishing for many years, I admire the incredible talent that so many authors and illustrators bring to students of all ages. I am grateful for my own access to quality art materials when I was a student, and for my teachers who valued creative expression. My experience definitely shaped my future. Having the right materials is essential in helping to inspire and enhance creativity in the classroom.

If the teacher has contacted you since their project was funded, please share their comments:

Dear Westchester Education Services,

Thank you for funding this project. Your support is very much appreciated. Our third graders are going to become amazing authors and illustrators thanks to your generosity. I can’t wait to show you all the results in the spring. Looking forward to getting this project started! You’re the best!

With gratitude,
Ms. Rountree
